This morning, checking out at the drugstore, the older gentleman ringing me up asked how my day was so far. “Great.” I replied, surprised by the question. I haven’t typically had the warmest interactions at drugstores – nothing bad, but just not “How is your day”-good, you know?
“How is yours?” I asked back.
“Good.” He chirped. “It’s Monday!”
I stopped for a second – I usually hear this response from people without the exclamation mark at the end. I’m sure you can all relate!
“Oh!” I needed to clarify. “That’s a good thing, right?”
“Of course! We have the whole week ahead of us – how could it not be?”
YES. I thought (and said) loudly. YES! That’s it! I love this guy!
That is absolutely what Monday is – it isn’t the start of the grind, something you get “a case of”, two days until Wednesday, 4 days until Friday, or the day you put “Ughhh” on your Facebook status. Monday is THE day! It’s like New Years Day every week – if there is something you want to start, a person you would like to become, an attitude you would like to take on, Monday is the perfect day!
I spent many Sundays crying – literally – because of the prospect of Monday. I remember sitting in the movie theater with my family when I was little, tears falling when the movie started to end because I knew I had to go home and get ready for school the next day. High school was no different (maybe a little less crying), and in college I worked incredibly hard to make sure that I didn’t even have classes on Mondays, so it was just another day. There were definitely jobs that gave me the Sunday blues (understatement of the year!), and I remember the day when I decided – “I will have a day job where every day feels like the weekend, and where I don’t have to sit in a chair all day.” THAT was a good day. 🙂
If you find yourself dreading the start of the week, remember – you don’t have to work where you are working, you don’t have to live like you are living, and you don’t have to dread like you are dreading. You can change everything, starting TODAY (see! Monday!) to get to the point where you, too, don’t sit in a chair all day, and every morning feels like a Saturday! I PROMISE! So go get it, please!
Also, for the daily dose of perspective, there are plenty of people out there who would give anything to have another Monday, let alone your Monday. So live this one up, please! you deserve it.
